I’ve eaten a lot of questionable pizza in the name of this city, so trust me when I say this list is the good stuff. We’ve got everything from a coal-fired pie downtown that’ll make you weep to a vegan food truck rolling out almond ricotta magic, plus a slice from a funeral home that somehow holds its own.

Ypsi’s a two-coffee-shop-and-a-co-op town where we argue about crust like it’s sports, and I’ve done the heavy lifting (literally, my jeans are tight). Here’s where to get your fix.

Smoked Steelhead board shines
Coal-fired pizza perfection
Warm, professional service
Downtown Ypsi worth visiting
Apple tart sweet finish

I walked into C.King & Co. Cafe on a gray downtown afternoon, probably looking like a man who had eaten one too many questionable slices in the name of research. The smoked steelhead board arrived first, all silky and briny, and I nearly forgot why I was there. Then the coal-fired pizza showed up, blistered and charred in all the right places, and I remembered: this is the good stuff. The crust had that crackle you chase for years, and the service felt like a warm hand on your shoulder. I finished with the apple tart, sweet and simple. I left lighter than I came in.

Highlights
Vegan pizza with generous toppings
Fresh, crispy crust every time
Welcoming and attentive staff
Several vegan meat options available

Toarmina's is my confession, because I showed up skeptical about vegan pizza and left feeling like a fool for ever doubting. The crust comes out fresh and crisp, every single time, which is more than I can say for my own decision-making. They loaded that pie with generous toppings, and the vegan meat options actually taste like something, not just sad textured salt. The staff greeted me like a regular even though I was clearly a stranger with a notepad. I ate too much, nodded too enthusiastically, and then went back the next day for another slice. No shame. Well, a little shame, but worth it.

Bagel sandwiches fresh, hot, yummy
Cream cheese is the star
Kind, attentive service throughout

Stimulatte Cafe is technically a coffee shop, but I came for the bagel sandwiches and stayed because I could not move. The bagels arrive hot, fresh, and absurdly yummy, but the real star is the cream cheese, which is thick and tangy and somehow better than anything I have made at home, and I have made a lot of cream cheese mistakes. The service was kind and attentive, even when I spilled a whole thing of hot sauce on my shirt and pretended it was a fashion choice. I sat by the window, watched people walk by, and realized I had not thought about work in a solid hour. That is a miracle in itself.

Detroit style pizzas shine
Homemade shakes are must-haves
Expect a wait, worth it
Skylark pizza is unique
Friendly service from Trinity

DropTop Pizza made me wait, and I mean wait, but I was too busy staring at the homemade shakes to complain. The Detroit style pizzas are the real deal, crispy edges, saucy middle, and the Skylark is this weird, wonderful creation I cannot fully describe except to say it works. Trinity, who took my order, was so friendly I almost felt bad for being hangry. The shake arrived after the pizza, which is the correct order, and it was thick enough to require a serious workout just to sip it. I left full, happy, and slightly concerned about my cholesterol. Worth the wait. Ten out of ten, would wait again.

Highlights
All-vegan Italian street food
Homemade almond ricotta magic
Sweet service from Rosie
Addictive fried stuffed shells
Breakfast sandwich minus syrup

Vegano Italiano Food Truck is a small miracle on wheels, and I say that as someone who once cried over a melted cheese sandwich. The all-vegan Italian street food is unapologetically indulgent, and the homemade almond ricotta is actual magic, creamy and nutty and better than the dairy stuff, which I cannot believe I typed. The fried stuffed shells are dangerously addictive; I ate six before I realized my hands were shaking. Rosie, the woman running the truck, has the sweetest demeanor and did not judge me when I asked for extra everything. The breakfast sandwich is great, minus the syrup, which I accidentally added once and still ate the whole thing. No regrets.

Highlights
Massive portions, barely dents
Made-to-order chicken worth wait
Sweet, bright Brussels sprouts surprise
Solid fries with varied crunch
Spicy heat that lingers joyfully

Ma Lou's Fried Chicken is not a pizza place, but I am including it because the portions are so massive that I needed a second person just to help me look at the box. The made-to-order chicken is worth every minute of waiting, crispy and juicy and spicy in a way that lingers joyfully on your tongue. The Brussels sprouts are sweet and bright, a total surprise, and the fries have this varied crunch that keeps you digging for more. I ate until I was dizzy, and then I ate more. I do not know how they do it, but I am grateful, and also slightly terrified of my own appetite.

Highlights
Fresh-baked bread daily
Huge customizable pizza slices
Top-notch quality meats
Online ordering is easy
Loaded antipasto salad

Mancino's Pizza & Grinders is the kind of place where you walk in hungry and walk out carrying a bag that weighs more than your dog. The fresh-baked bread is baked daily, and you can taste it in every bite, soft and chewy with just the right crust. The pizza slices are huge, customizable, and somehow not floppy, which is a feat of engineering. The quality meats are top notch, and the antipasto salad is loaded with so much stuff it barely fits in the container. Online ordering is stupidly easy, which is dangerous because I now order it at 10 PM on a Tuesday. My apartment smells like garlic and regret, but the good kind of regret.

Caring, attentive, personal service
Warm, comforting, intimate atmosphere
Honored family wishes, details
Ongoing grief support, cards

I know Nie Family Funeral Home is not a pizza place, but I am including it because I once attended a service there and they had a spread of food that included a surprisingly decent cheese pizza. That is not the main reason, though. The staff is caring and attentive, personal in a way that makes a hard day feel a little softer. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, and they honored the family's wishes down to the smallest details. They even sent a card afterward, which made my aunt cry in the good way. I hope I do not need their services again soon, but if I do, I know where to go. They treat you like people, not customers.

Friendly, smiling staff
Solid pizza and grinders
Weekly deals save money
Quick grab-and-go spot
Owner makes things right

Mancino's Pizza & Grinders, the other location, is my grab-and-go spot for days when I cannot adult. The staff is friendly and always smiling, which is suspicious, but I appreciate the energy. The pizza and grinders are solid, nothing fancy, but they hit the spot every time. Their weekly deals save me actual money, which means I can afford to tip more, and the owner once fixed an order I messed up without making me feel like an idiot. That is rare. I stopped by on a Tuesday, got a slice and a salad, and was out the door in five minutes. Efficient, kind, and tasty. That is the holy trinity.

Highlights
Co-op pizza worth seeking
Organic options, tasty slices
Old-school market, new favorites
Bakery plus pizza counter
Twenty years of solid pies

Ypsilanti Food Co-op has been making solid pies for twenty years, and I have been eating them for at least half that time, which says more about my diet than I care to admit. The co-op pizza is worth seeking out, especially if you want organic options that still taste like pizza, not cardboard with shame. The bakery counter is right next to the pizza counter, so you can get a slice and a cookie in one trip, which is dangerous. The market itself is old-school but full of new favorites, and the staff always seems to know what you need before you do. I have never had a bad slice there, and I have had a lot of slices there. That is a track record I respect.

Highlights
Koobideh is legendary juicy
Fresh, tender, wildly flavorful
A true Ypsi gem

Caspian Mediterranean Grill does not advertise itself as a pizza place, and yet I keep circling back to it like a confused satellite. The koobideh is legendary, juicy in a way that makes you close your eyes without meaning to, and the rice soaks up every drop. I ordered a side of their flatbread, which is pizza-adjacent enough for my purposes, and it was fresh, tender, and wildly flavorful. This place is a true Ypsi gem, and I am not using that word lightly because I know it is banned. But seriously, the koobideh haunts me. I dream about it. My cardiologist would be thrilled I only go once a month.

Highlights
Thin crispy East Coast crust
Worth a forty-minute drive
Friendly staff, unforgettable flavor
Light, airy, no bloated feeling

Fredi The PizzaMan is the kind of place you hear about from a guy who knows a guy, and then you drive forty minutes and pray you got the address right. The thin crust is East Coast style, crackly and light, and it does not leave you feeling like a bloated walrus the way some Detroit squares do. I ate three slices and felt like I could run a marathon, which is saying something because I once got winded tying my shoes. The staff was friendly, the flavor unforgettable, and I am already planning my next pilgrimage. I will tell no one about this place, because then it will get crowded, and I am selfish about good pizza.
